What is a judo therapist?

A judo therapist is a profession that utilizes the body's natural healing abilities to promote functional recovery. They perform first aid for dislocations, fractures, and sprains in sports settings, and conduct functional training in caregiving and welfare environments, aiming to obtain qualifications that allow them to work in a wide range of fields.

Introduction of the Instructor.

Head of the Department
of Judo Therapy
Mr. Hiromi Okubo
I want to cultivate judo therapists who can communicate well with patients, equipped with knowledge and skills, and who are loved by everyone. While knowledge and skills are certainly important, I want them to prioritize consideration, thoughtfulness, and attentiveness from the patient's perspective.

In the first year, we focus on building a solid foundation in the medical field. In addition to the prescribed curriculum, students also work through past exam question sets during summer and winter courses. The national exam is all about results. We encourage students to adopt a results-oriented mindset from the first year. Since the studies are directly connected to their desired jobs, everyone comes to class with a sparkle in their eyes.
In the second year, students build on the foundational skills acquired in the first year and develop their applied skills. They will also take on the challenge of obtaining the JATI (Japan Athletic Trainers' Association) certification. In addition to practical judo therapy techniques, they will study specialized medical subjects such as anatomy, which fosters a growing awareness of their role as healthcare professionals and boosts their motivation.
In the third year, everything will progress towards the national exam starting in April. In terms of studies, we will thoroughly enhance foundational skills. Additionally, to improve social skills in preparation for employment, students will also learn about clinical thinking and how to communicate with patients. Throughout the three years, stepping into unfamiliar areas will be essential, so being open-minded and proactive will become important.

CURRICULUM

Course Content
The treatments performed by judo therapists are diverse, and in addition to manual techniques, there are methods that use equipment. In practical training, we will learn each of these diverse treatments carefully.
heat therapy
By applying heat, it helps to relieve pain and promote smooth blood circulation, as well as providing mental relaxation effects. It is one of the easy and commonly used treatment methods.
taping
By wrapping tape around the injured area to secure it, taping is not only used to treat the damaged part but also serves as a prevention method for injuries. It is an essential skill for judo therapists.
manual therapy
The practitioner uses their 'hands' to apply stimuli such as kneading and pressing to the patient's body, activating the body's inherent natural healing abilities to promote early recovery from injuries and restore function.
exercise therapy
By actively incorporating exercise using either manual techniques or equipment, we aim to reduce symptoms and restore function.
physical therapy
This therapy uses physical energy such as electricity, heat, and light to alleviate pain and enhance the range of motion in joints, facilitating smoother daily activities.
